SPIA Appointed as Kerala’s Official Nodal Agency for Hoarding Printing Waste Management

A Landmark Achievement in Signage Industry Governance

Kerala | July 2025

In a groundbreaking move, the Government of Kerala, under the Suchitwa Mission, has officially designated the Sign and Printing Industries Association (SPIA) as the sole M-panel nodal agency for the collection and management of hoarding printing waste across the state.

This landmark decision marks a new era of environmental accountability and structured waste disposal within the state’s signage and printing industry.

A Historic Milestone in Industry-Led Governance

With this official recognition, SPIA is now authorized to:

  • Collect and manage hoarding printing waste across all districts in Kerala
  • Ensure eco-friendly disposal and recycling practices
  • Issue mandatory approval letters (NOC) for all new or renewed licenses related to printing and signage businesses

From now on, all signage and printing units in Kerala must obtain clearance from SPIA as part of the licensing process. This mandate introduces a layer of regulatory discipline while empowering the industry to take ownership of its environmental responsibilities.

A Win for 2,000 Printing Units and 5 Lakh Workers

This government initiative is not only an institutional recognition of SPIA’s leadership—it’s also a direct benefit to over 2,000 printing units that are members of the Kerala Sign Printing Industries Association and the over 5 lakh peopleemployed in the sector.

For the first time, the printing industry in Kerala is being positioned to rise to new heights, backed by state recognition and structured pathways to overcome challenges. This is expected to unlock financial opportunities, boost industry credibility, and provide sustainable support for thousands of small and medium enterprises.

A Model for the Nation

This move by the Kerala government is more than just a regional achievement—it is a model for the entire country. By empowering an industry-led body like SPIA to take charge of waste management and regulatory compliance, the state has shown bold leadership in sustainable industrial development.

This decision is a good responsibility and a positive step forward for India’s entire printing and signage industry. It reaffirms the belief that self-regulation, with the right oversight, can lead to cleaner environments, stronger businesses, and better futures.
