The Indian women’s hockey team striker, Vandana Katariya, has been appointed as the ambassador of Uttarakhand’s Women Empowerment and Child Development Department.
Vandana Katariya played a pivotal role in the team’s entry to semifinal of Women’s hockey in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She also became the first Indian woman to score a hat-trick at the Olympics where India secured fourth-place finish in Tokyo. After losing the semifinal against Argentina, some upper caste men in her village hurled casteist remarks against her and family which created a controversy. All the accused have now been arrested. Earlier, the Uttrakhand government had also announced a cash reward of Rs.25 lakh for Vandana Katariya, thanks to her stellar performance in Tokyo.
Uttarakhand Sports Minister Arvind Pandey had paid a visit to her family in Haridwar district’s Roshanabad village after the controversy. The minister said that she is a role model for the youth and everyone should learn from her.
